Quality assurance is an integrated part of any calibration facility. The calibration facility as well as its customers are interested in the facility production outgoing quality. In most calibration labs the inspection of calibrated items is performed according to a suitable sampling inspection policy. Some of these policies are very good in assuring the quality of the calibration services they offer, but do not provide a clear assessment of the outgoing quality of the entire production of the facility. This paper has developed two methods of calculating the average outgoing quality (AOQ) of a calibration lab that uses a multistage sampling inspection policy. The policy structure is presented first along with the exact procedure of how to perform it by the inspectors and the methods to calculate the AOQ. The two methods differ from each another in the type of data required to calculate the AOQ. The first method requires the technicians' production, the number of items subject to inspections and the number of failing items found. The second method requires only the number of technicians at each level of the multistage inspection policy. The verifications of the performances of two methods are accomplished by building a simulation model on an Excel worksheet. The model simulates the calibration facility with the right parameters, and then compares the two methods with the actual AOQ. The paper further discusses the advantages and disadvantages of each method in a broader context of quality assurance.

Scenarios help practitioners to better understand the requirements of a software system as well as its interface with the environment. However, despite their widespread use both by object-oriented development teams and human-computer interface designers, scenarios are being built in a very ad-hoc way. Departing from the requirements engineering viewpoint, this article shows how inspections help software developers to better manage the production of scenarios. We used Fagan's inspections as the main paradigm in the design of our proposed process. The process was applied to case studies and data were collected regarding the types of problems as well as the effort to find them.

The world is rapidly shifting from internal combustion engine vehicles to battery electric vehicles (EV). EV battery manufacturing requires nondestructive evaluation (NDE) solutions for quality verification that can operate under a unique set of constraints, including extremely fast cycle times, small geometric scales, and conductive materials. Individually, the demands imposed by many of these constraints can be met with existing technologies. As a collective, however, they prove challenging to conventional NDE technologies. It is therefore imperative that NDE methods and technologies drastically evolve to keep pace with this disruptive paradigm shift. The goal of this paper is to provide a summary of the current research needs for NDE in EV battery cell manufacturing.

Many software project managers try to decide whether to enhance
reliability by performing detailed inspections or by doing
execution-based testing using operational profiles. The authors regard
this as a false choice. Operational-profile-based testing is an
important method, but it is not a simple, cost-effective panacea.
Instead, they suggest a better approach: a diverse validation,
verification, and testing strategy that includes inspections and
execution-based testing. Such an approach addresses the more appropriate
question of what selection of W and T techniques should a project employ
to achieve the functionality and quality that the product
requires?

In this design note we describe a simple circuit that can control and acquire many commercial CCD sensors by using a simple interface based on the enhanced parallel port (EPP-IEEE1284 protocol). Simplicity, low cost, high speed, immunity to noise and convenient software control are some of the advantages that make the proposed interface ideal for physics experiments and machine vision applications.

Due to the complexity of the code, software is released with many errors. In response, both software practitioners and software researchers need to improve the reputation of the software. Inspection is the only way to improve the quality of software. Inspection methods can be more effective but success depends on having a sound and systematic procedure for conducting the inspection. The Workshop on Inspection in Software Engineering (WISE), a satellite event of the 2001 Computer Aided Verification (CAV '01) Conference, brought together researchers, practitioners, and regulators in the hope of finding effective approaches to software inspection. The workshop included invited lectures and paper presentations in the form of panel discussions on all aspects of software inspection. Submissions explained how practitioners and researchers were performing inspections, discussed the relevance of inspections, provided evidence of how inspections could be improved through refinement of the inspection process and computer aided tool support and explained how careful design of software could make inspections easier or more effective.

Software quality can be defined as the customers' perception of how a system works. Inspection is a method to monitor and control the quality throughout the development cycle. Reading techniques applied to inspections help reviewers to stay focused on the important parts of an artifact when inspecting. However, many reading techniques focus on finding as many faults as possible, regardless of their importance. Usage-based reading helps reviewers to focus on the most important parts of a software artifact from a user's point of view. We present an experiment, which compares usage-based and checklist-based reading. The results show that reviewers applying usage-based reading are more efficient and effective in detecting the most critical faults from a user's point of view than reviewers using checklist-based reading. Usage-based reading may be preferable for software organizations that utilize or start utilizing use cases in their software development.
